“Many of us think that math is hard, but, as Cheng makes clear, math is actually designed to make difficult things easier.”

I read this on the book jacket of one of my Christmas presents, How to Bake Pi: An Edible Exploration of the Mathematics of Mathematics by Eugenia Cheng.  Wha???  MATH?  The thing that we seem to have a universal, unspoken agreement on as “the hardest subject,” that you have to be extra smart to like or even do?  How does math make things EASIER?

This is one of many juicy topics I’ll be exploring this year in this blog. Stay tuned for that!

Points to ponder.  Fun stuff to roll around in your head, or better: to talk about with your learner!
Meanwhile, what do you think?  What does your kiddo think?  Here are some potentially enlightening interview questions for you and your learner.  Discuss!

  • Do you think math is hard?  If so,…
  • Did you always?  Do you remember when it started to feel hard?
  • Do you think it’s hard for others too?  Or just for you?
  • What do you think makes it hard?  Why is harder than English, for example, or History?  Or _________(fill in the blank with a subject they find “easier”.)
